So we’re starting a magazine. It’s called “Beachball” and you’re writing for it. Congratulations! Our tentative plan is to have a different theme for each “issue,” inasmuch as there will be issues, being that this magazine is to appear online and only online. The theme of the first issue is . . . well, it’s not a theme, so much as a directive. Here is your directive:
“ Critically analyze something about which you have yet to make up your mind. It can be a movie, a piece of literature, a bit of music, an object, a person, whatever you like. You are welcome to work through to a conclusion, or you can leave your mind unmade. But do demonstrate the process. And also, feel encouraged to break the wordly bond. Structure this criticism to whatever form you please. Figures, charts, diagrams, photos, all challengers taken, no datum denied.”
